Summary

Mozambique, located in southeastern Africa, is known for its extensive coastline along the Indian Ocean, diverse cultural heritage, and rich natural resources. It shares borders with Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, South Africa and Eswatini to the southwest, and the Indian Ocean to the east. Mozambique has a population of approximately 33 million (2024 estimate), with a high rural population. Maputo, the capital, is an important regional center for trade and commerce. The country’s economy is largely dependent on agriculture, mining, and natural gas, with increasing foreign investment in infrastructure and energy projects. Mozambique’s economy has seen significant growth over the past decade due to large discoveries of natural gas reserves, but it remains one of the poorest countries in the world, with widespread poverty and income inequality. The country faces various economic and political challenges, including corruption, conflict, and natural disasters. Mozambique is part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and participates in several international trade agreements, with a focus on diversifying its economy beyond natural resources.
