Summary

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), located in the heart of Africa, is a nation of vast potential but significant challenges. Covering 2.34 million square kilometers, the DRC is the second-largest country in Africa and the 11th largest globally. It is bordered by nine countries, including Angola, Uganda, Rwanda, and the Republic of the Congo, making it a vital geopolitical player in the region. The country’s extensive natural resources, including its world-leading reserves of cobalt and significant deposits of copper, diamonds, gold, and coltan, position it as a critical supplier for the global green energy transition and high-tech industries. With a population of approximately 101 million (2024 estimate), the DRC is characterized by a youthful demographic, with over 60% of its population under the age of 25. The capital, Kinshasa, is a bustling urban hub and one of Africa’s largest cities, with a population exceeding 15 million. Despite its size and resource wealth, the DRC struggles with widespread poverty, weak governance, and inadequate infrastructure, which have hampered its ability to fully harness its potential. The economy is heavily reliant on the mining sector, which accounts for the majority of export revenues. Other key industries include agriculture, forestry, and energy. However, persistent issues such as corruption, political instability, and insecurity in the eastern regions have created an unpredictable business environment.
